You might know her as the “We can do it!” lady from those iconic posters. You know, the female empowerment icon with the red bandana, denim shirt, and raised fist. But she has an actual name too: That’s Rosie the Riveter, and since the mid-1900s, she has been an idol for feminists, activists, women, and girls all over!
Rosie the Riveter became a generic term for all the working women during World War II. Due to a high demand of soldiers, the workforce in the United States was suddenly at a low supply of factory workers. That’s when the women stepped in to help with what had typically been considered “men’s work”. The government created the Rosie the Riveter campaign to encourage American women to go to work in the munitions industry, helping to create military-use firearms. The U.S. soldiers needed supplies, and back in the 1940s, factories required more manual power than today’s more automated systems.
Imagine If They Had Our Rosie the Riveter Socks!
The image on the poster was loosely based on a compilation of women in the workforce. The idea was that any woman could see herself in the fictitious uniform and be inspired to join the workforce.
Here at Socksmith, we can’t get enough of Rosie’s polka-dotted bandana and shirt with the sleeves rolled up. And can you imagine how our Rosie the Riveter socks would have completed the outfit? We think it would be the perfect match.
These days, Rosie the Riveter is still an icon for women and girls to be strong and powerful. And what’s better motivation than an icon you can actually wear?! (Maybe some Rosie the Riveter socks? Just a thought!)

Rosie the Riveter became a generic term for all the working women during World War II. The draft was imposed and factories were operating at high production demand with a low supply of workers. “America Needs You” was the call that was answered by women across the country to go work in factories. These women stepped in to help with what had always been considered “men’s work”, beginning to change the perception of women for the future.
